Welcome to the first post-MySpace edition of News of the River, where the goings-on in the world today are sliced, diced, and served in a seaweed wrap!
Big Brown wins the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Eight Belles, another contender, fell and broke two ankles and was euthanized the same day. China has announced a similar incentive program for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
A Vanity Fair photo shoot of 15-year-old singing sensation Miley Cyrus has caused some controversy due to the sexually implicit nature of the photographs. News of the controversy drove enough traffic to Vanity Fair's website to shut it down. It's nice to see that the dirty-old-man contingency has finally gotten over it's crush on the Olsen twins.
Microsoft has withdrawn a $46 billion bid to purchase Yahoo. The would-be merger might have given the companies some ground to fight Google for control of the internet, but Microsoft maintains that they will implement their own web advertising scheme. Here's an idea: charge people $1 to click a button that says "How do I get rid of Vista?"
Hillary Clinton and John McCain... wait. Sorry, it's still only May. I'll start caring about the presidential campaign in August. Like a normal person.
And finally, the Olympic torch has reached Chinese soil, landing in Hong Kong yesterday. Protestors across Europe have tried to put out the flame, and they succeeded three times in Paris. The Chinese government had this to say: "We wanted to be offended, but it was nice to see the French put up a fight for once." The French government issued the following rebuttal:
"We surrender."
