E3: Kinda Funny, Kinda Sad

E3 is going on, so IGN is dropping more Wii news in my feed reader at a rate of about ten messages every hour.

Jeenkies!

Most of the announcements involve variations on the Rock-Band-Guitar-Hero trend, to which I'm not especially enamored. The videos for Ultimate Band, Wii Music, Karaoke Revolutions, etc--to that I say "meh".

MadWorld looks interesting. Although that announcement has left me with the Gary Jules a la Donnie Darko cover of the song by Tears for Fears (and if all of those references elude you... well shit, I just can't help you) stuck in my head all damned day. You know the one. "I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad."

And now it's stuck in your head as well.

The demos of the latest Wii peripheral (called the Motion...something or other--I could look it up, but you already know what I'm talking about) are muy impressive. They blow the standard Wiimote out of the water, which already blows the PS3's Six-Axis out of the water. It will be the next must-have for Wii owners, and they demo'd it on a sequel to Wii Sports, which will include frisbee tossing, jet-skiing, and fencing. Yes, fencing.

There have also been hints about a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy, a Wii Pikmin title and a Wii Zelda game (because, let's face it, Twilight Princess was a GameCube title that missed the boat).

On the whole, the vibe from the Nintendo tent, as transplanted into my feed-reader, seems to be one of "the best is yet to come", and that's saying something for the company that's dominating the gaming market (with a parenthetical aside to note that the XBox 360 is also doing quite well, just not as well).

Exciting times.
