A few years ago, when our band absolutely needed a website, it seemed like the best idea was for me to learn HTML and CSS and actually build one. Which I did--and it was functional and kitschy if not particularly elegant.
Well, we've decided to give the band website a dark, gritty reboot, and perhaps some actual dynamic content in lieu of just a series of linked static pages. So I'm at it again, but my year-and-a-few-months as a Java developer has given me some new tools: namely experience building UI's and a working knowledge of Google's Web Toolkit (GWT). Using those, my regular IDE, and MS Paint to tweak some images, I've been able to put together a simple, functional site in a matter of hours (as opposed to days or weeks, like it took the first time around). It's a far cry from deployable, but it's a nice proof-of-concept and a fairly good indicator that the results-to-time-spent ratio will be going up-up-up!
Of course, this means I'll be spending my spare time doing web development. It would be one thing if I were a graphic designer... but I'm not... not even remotely. So a lot of the visual side I'm cobbling together from spare parts. And CSS is still a horrible, horrible thing to be tied to. But I can bitch all day...
It's nice to actually be getting something done.

I'm a fan of CSS. And PHP. I love being able to change multiple parts with one move.
