In political science class, the prof taught us that the purpose of an election was, in the minds of the founding fathers, to filter out the common people from running. They felt like elites only should govern. It was thought that anyone who could achieve national recognition must, by definition, be elite enough to rule.
So, I guess it's fair to say that one of the side effects of the Information Age? Our complete failure to filter morons out of the political process.
